The Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) will be launching its first Incubation Day event on Friday 12 March 2010 in Midrand, Nelspruit and Port Elizabeth in an effort to reach entrepreneurs with a passion for technology.
The event is based on the international Incubation Day model – an initiative of UK Business Incubation. Its objective is to celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship through the process of incubation (small enterprise development acceleration).
Jayesh Ravjee, the Acting Executive Manager of the Seda Technology Programme, says the launch follows Seda's participation in the global Incubation Day event just over a year ago. "We participated in the initial international Incubation Day, which was held at the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) campus in Pretoria on 8 December 2008. While the event was a great success, it didn't allow us to engage entrepreneurs – and expose incubation centres – outside Gauteng. We are launching Incubation Day this year in three locations across the country, with the aim of reaching more people and showcasing more services within this sector," Ravjee explains.
Incubation Day specifically targets entrepreneurs who want to develop their businesses through innovation and technology. Free events will be hosted by the Seda Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator in Port Elizabeth, Softstart BTI in Midrand and Timbali Technology Incubator in Nelspruit, as follows:
|SBTI (Midrand, Gauteng) To be hosted at the centre
|No.220 Alexandra & Second street,|
Randjies Park Ext 13
|TIMBALI (Nelspruit, Mpumalanga) To be hosted at the centre
|Portion 72 Friedenheim,|
ARC Friedenheim Experimental Farm,
|SNMBICTI (Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape) To be hosted at the King Edward Hotel, approximately 1km away from the centre.
|King Edward Hotel|
Each event will feature presentations by key incubation stakeholders, including funding institutions, the relevant province (economic development); relevant universities or science councils (to showcase technologies available to entrepreneurs) and Seda, which will highlight the value of their product offerings to SMMEs.
The presentations will take place between 11am and 12:30pm, while the exhibitions will be open from 9am to 3pm (entrance to both is free). Each programme will feature technology demonstrations; opportunities to meet and interact with exhibitors and funding institutions; and listening to SMMEs telling own success stories.
Incubation Day is directly in line with Seda's mission to develop, support and promote small enterprises throughout South Africa, and is an extension of its brand promise, ‘we make it our business to build your business.'
