Coffee  
 
Coffee is consumed as a hot or cold beverage by about one-third of the world's population, and its total consumption is larger than that of any other beverage except tea. The tree requires a warm climate and ample moisture. South Africa is a net importer of coffee and consumes more than 20 000 ton per annum.
 
At present no more than 200 ha of coffee are under production in South Africa, mostly in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces. However, coffee is an ideal wealth and job creator, and is one of the only crops well suited to both small-scale farmers and commercial estates. This factor, and the ability of both farming systems to earn foreign exchange from the crop, makes it a unique indigenous wealth creator. In addition, it is an ideal pioneer crop for areas with poor infrastructure, as it is one of the few tropical horticultural crop products that can be stored for relatively long periods without perishing (Source: ARC-Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Crops.)
